NICE News: Miracle on 22nd Street

I don't know about you, but I'm still in a Christmassy mood! Maybe it's because I finally went to check my P.O. Box yesterday after neglecting it for months, and there were special treats in there! A Christmas card from my friend, Colleen. A Thanksgiving card from my friend Matt. A sweet letter from Olivia in Australia. And a card and BROWNIES from Jennifer! Brownies!! Whaaa? Seriously.

Anyway, even though Heidi K. sent me this link on Christmas morning, I think it's still absolutely wonderful and just had to share, even though Christmas is over.

"Kids think that Santa Claus lives in Chelsea," so adorable couple obliges.

This video is so heart-warming. Watch what happens when a couple in Manhattan starts randomly receiving letters to Santa. What would you do? Well, like most nice people, these two decide they want to fulfill as many Christmas wishes as they can!

What would you do if you started receiving letters to Santa in your own mailbox?

NICE Assignment: 5 favorite things about 2010

NICE Assignment
Hi everyone! I hope you all had an amazing Christmas! Mine was delightful, thank you for asking. We spent Christmas Eve with Rob's family and the last few days stranded at my parents' house, due to the snow storm. But hey, if there's any place I'd like to be stranded, it's my parents' house. My mom feeds me and pampers me, and I get to play with their puppy, Mindy!

So since I couldn't make it home yesterday, the NICE Assignment for the week comes to you today. And I really like this one. :) The year is coming to a close. Can you believe it? Before I jump into a new year, I like to look back on the current one and relive all the awesome things that happened! Sure, it wasn't all awesome, but let's just forget about all that negative stuff and focus on the best!

Today's Assignment: 5 favorite things about 2010

I made a download for you guys! Click here to download the "5 Favorite Things of 2010" printable. It has four to a sheet (cut in half lengthwise and widthwise), so I think it'd be a lot of fun to fill out with loved ones, maybe as a New Years Eve activity. Maybe some of your items will overlap, or maybe you'll be reminded of something that slipped your mind.

Here's my filled out list:

I'd love to see or read your list! What are your 5 favorite things about 2010?

NICE Person of the Week: Narayanan Krishnan

Guess what. I am off from work for ten, glorious days! I feel like a kid on winter break. This is the first time I've taken more than a day or two off during the holidays, so I'm absolutely giddy! EEP! Any of you doing anything special? I'm visiting family, doing the usual. But I'm hoping I get to do some of those things I can never seem to find time for, like sitting on the couch with a good book and a glass of wine. Ahhhhh.

Today's NICE Person of the Week submission comes all the way from Mumbai, India! Alia sent in this nomination for Narayanan Krishnan, an absolute inspiration.

What makes Narayanan so NICE:

Narayanan Krishnan, a former chef in a five star restaurant in India who was interviewing for lucrative culinary positions in Europe. But that all changed when decided to make a quick trip home to his native Madurai, a small community in south India, before leaving to interview for a position in Switzerland. Krishnan was so disturbed by the image of poverty in his own community; he began to realize another dream in the making. Narayanan Krishnan was so troubled by the image of an elderly man in his community eating his own waste out of desperate hunger, that a week later he quit his job in a 5 star restaurant to feed the hungry in his own community.

Krishnan founded the nonprofit, Akshaya Trust in 2003 and today he feeds nearly 400 people daily. At only 29 years old, Krishnan has fed over 1.2 million meals to the hungry, according to CNN. Every day, he wakes up at 4 am, cooks a simple hot meal and then, along with his team, loads it in a van and travels about 200 km feeding the homeless in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Krishnan feeds, often with his hands, almost 400 destitute people every day. And for those who need it, he provides a free haircut too.

Doesn't that just blow your mind? Most of us are moved by the images we see in the world, but to completely change your life's mission because of it is just moving. Thank goodness this world has people like Narayanan. Thank you, Alia, for the submission!

Seasons Greetings!

Hi everyone! I just wanted to send out a little video message to wish you all a wonderful holiday season. It's super cheesy and involves me caroling to you, so you might want to keep your volume low. Haha! But seriously, I hope you have a spectacular Christmas, holiday, festivus, day off from work, or whatever! And thanks for choosing NICE over naughty!

NICE Testimonial: Another One Rides the Bus

That title is a Weird Al reference, if you're wondering. I used to love Weird Al when I was a kid. (Still do!) In 6th grade, I wanted to make my own parody songs, but they usually involved bathroom humor and got me in trouble. I saw those lunch aides laugh at my song before they turned it into the principal!

Ahem, anyway.

Today's testimonial comes from Pegi. A lot of people see their jobs as something that keeps them from what they really would rather be doing. (I'd rather be napping!) So being NICE might not be at the top of their priority list. But when you encounter someone who strives to be kind while they work, it's special. And Pegi came across one of those folks.

I had a truly NICE experience on a bus in Cambridge, MA this morning. As I got on, the driver said a cheery hello to me, which is unusual enough. When I sat down, however, I saw that she had set out some little convenience items to make the ride more comfortable for her passengers -- hand sanitizer, tissues, newspapers, bus schedules in a little beaded wire holder, and a little tray of candies. It was a nice homey touch, that made it clear that she cares about her riders. On our way off the bus, she said a cheery good-bye to everyone, and thanked us for riding with her! Really made my day... I've attached a picture of her setup. How NICE!

I wish I could give that bus driver a hug! That is so incredibly thoughtful. And I'll bet she really enjoys her job because she promotes kindness and happiness on a daily basis. Are you nice while you work? Is there something you could do to show the people you encounter daily that you care about them?

NICE News: The Secret Santa of Joplin

Christmas is so close I can taste it! Oh, maybe that's the Starbucks Peppermint Mocha I'm currently enjoying. Just got back from a holiday luncheon/Secret Santa with my coworkers. I scored a gift certificate to Philly Cupcake, so obviously my love of sweets is completely transparent. And my other coworker bought us these adorable cupcakes today. It's a cupcake-filled day! Sweet! (No pun intended.)

I treated myself to something extremely valuable for this holiday...ten days off work! I've never taken more than a day or two off at the end of the year, but I had some vacation days saved up, so I thought it'd be a good time to reward myself. Plus Rob, who's a teacher, will be off, so we can enjoy the week together, visit some family, and relax. Ahhhhh. It's the best present ever!

Speaking of incredible presents, my friends forwarded me this article from TIME, which is in a similar vein as this NICE News story from last week.

The Secret Santa of Joplin: $450,000 and Counting

There's this southwest Missouri town, Joplin, that has an anonymous joy-spreader who is sneaking generous donations into Salvation Army kettles.

From the article:
"Amidst the haul, a Salvation Army counting crew found five $1 bills, folded tightly into squares — each concealing a $20,000 cashier's check with "Santa Claus" listed as the remitter."

And it seems the do gooder is very good at keeping his or her identity a secret because they've been trying to crack the case for years. So the secret philanthropist isn't doing this for any recognition. It's coming from the good of his/her heart. How wonderful!

NICE Assignment: Let's Say Thanks

NICE Assignment
Happy Monday! I just want to say thank you to everyone who has taken the Operation NICE Reader Survey so far! I'm actually pretty surprised by some of the responses I've received, in a good way of course. Here I thought that everyone wanted a gazillion posts a week, but it seems that quite the opposite is true, which takes a little bit of the pressure off me. :) And I'm also glad to see that your favorite categories are also my favorite ones to post. So thanks again for offering your opinions, and if you haven't taken the survey yet, I'd love to hear from you too!

Since it's the season of giving, I thought it would be a good assignment to participate in the Let's Say Thanks campaign, sponsored by Xerox. If this is your first time hearing about it, here's a quick overview.

From the website:
"The mission of Let's Say Thanks is to provide a way for individuals across the country to recognize U.S. troops stationed overseas. By submitting a message through this site you have the opportunity to send a free personalized postcard greeting to deployed servicemen and women."

This is FREE, people! All you have to do is browse through the designs, which are insanely adorable drawings done by children, write a little message or even pick from pre-written ones, and click "submit."

Today's Assignment: Let's Say Thanks

So, what do you say? Want to join me in sending a message of gratitude overseas? I chose this card, mainly because I liked the fact that Austin included Korean as one of the languages. Yes, I'm biased. And I can't even read it!

We all love getting mail, right? (I mean real mail, not bills and circulars.) I'm sure when you're away from home for extended periods of time, a little mail can mean so much. So let's say thanks!

Operation NICE Reader Survey

Hi guys! I hope you're all having a pleasant weekend! I had some holiday success and just need to pick up a few more things for two of my Secret Santas tonight. And I have to give props to my husband, Rob, who actually got me a gift prior to Christmas day this year. He's had a habit of putting it off until after the holiday. Well, he must have picked it up this morning because when he got home, he wanted to exchange gifts right away. Ha! :) He is an anxious gift-giver! And as an anxious gift-opener (I used to sneak peeks of my gifts under the tree when I was a kid which isn't NICE, I know), it's going to be hard to hold out the rest of the week!

As I've mentioned in some recent posts, I'm trying to develop a plan to grow Operation NICE in 2011, and I thought it would be a neat idea to find out what you guys really want. So I developed an Operation NICE Reader Survey. It's only ten questions long and should only take a few minutes to complete. I tweeted the link and posted it in Facebook, and I have already received some really interesting responses! For example, a 12-year old commented and asked if I could do some posts meant for kids. Brilliant! I never would have thought about that!

So if you have a few minutes, would you mind sharing your thoughts? It'll really help point me in the right direction. Thanks so much!

NICE Campaign: Launch Pad

I am dragging....um, butt....today. Last night Rob and I went out to see a friend's band play, and I think I hit the point of having difficulty going out on work nights, well, when I got my first job. I am a lover of sleep. Anything less than seven hours and I'm a zombie. Don't get me wrong, it was totally worth it! All three bands rocked, and we met some really cool people. I mentioned my blog to this guy, Jordan, (hi Jordan!) and he said, "I was just telling Christina how nice you guys are!" Sweet, so I'm living up to the moniker. :)

So I wanted to tell you guys about this cool project. It's a contest, actually. It's called Launch Pad, and that's what it's aiming to be...a launch pad for five inspiring people who want to put their ideas for social good into action. It's totally reminding me of the Positivity Project, and here's the kicker, it's only for people who are 45 and over.

So if you fit into that age group and you have an idea for how you can make a difference in your community, submit now! I'm serious, like right now, because the deadline is this Monday, December 20, 2010. Five winners will receive $5000 each to help get their projects off the ground.

From the site:
Simply put, we’re here to build a movement to help people transition from previous jobs to encore careers with passion, purpose and a paycheck.

So I'd love to know, even if you're not over 45, how would you use $5000 to improve your community?

NICE Person of the Week: Captain Terry McCann

Well look at that. It's Thursday, which means NICE Person of the Week day! See? I meant it when I said I was determined. There are so many people doing wonderful things in the world, and they deserve to be recognized! It's all too often that our water cooler talk revolves around something terrible that happened, but there's so much good that we could be focusing on.

Today's NICE Person of the Week submission comes from Cris L. of Hanover County, VA. She was really passionate about making sure that I knew how amazing her nominee, Terry, truly is. And you can see why.

What makes Terry so NICE:
Okay, granted, in the Fire Service we are in the business of helping people. That is what we do. When it comes to nice people, those who rise above, Captain Terry McCann, in Mechanicsville, VA, pound for pound - will emerge a champion.

In many firehouses you will find very, very dedicated public servants. A Fire Station is quite likely to harbor great volunteers and career firefighters with enhanced giving and caring characteristics.

Captain McCann sets a great example on a daily basis. His kindness is a constant and is ever present at home and in the community, in addition to his workplace. Terry accepted a position in law enforcement before transitioning his service to fire and emergency medical response. His desire to help others keeps him busy on many fronts. Our area schools, scouting programs, youth sports, various charity causes and his church all benefit from this nice guy's efforts.

McCann is quick to engage in the typical stuff parents do. He volunteers with his kids' school activities, youth sports leagues and scouting (Cub) troops. A difference lies in the enthusiasm he applies to this, absolutely no reluctance despite his busy schedule. Terry is also quick to assume extra work so others do not experience an inconvenience. Many may pitch in a little while he gives a great deal. It is actually hard to select a single focus act of kindness he has extended. For Terry it is just everyday life, routine stuff, as he very often places others first.

In the Fire Service our big nonprofit partner is the MDA (Jerry’s Kids and the National Fill – The – Boot Campaign). Terry has applied significant efforts to see our f – t – b collections succeed. To see that his kids understand the importance of community and giving, his family supports the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree and Silver Bells holiday charities each year. The McCanns have also gathered items to send/give to American Soldiers through Boatsies Boxes For Baghdad.

By any measure, Captain Terry McCann, with Hanover Fire-EMS, is a nice guy. This very dedicated Firefighter and Leader is taking a great approach to see that his next generation places emphasis on giving and helping others.

This man deserves a hug and a nap! Holy cow, I'm exhausted just reading about everything he does! It's obvious that he is a great leader, and it's amazing how he takes that leadership and encourages the value of service and generosity. Thank you, Captain McCann! You are truly an inspiration!

NICE News: Secret Santa Spreads Joy

In my letter to Santa, I mentioned that I wanted a Christmas tradition of my own. Well, thanks to three of my girlfriends, I think I have one. :) They came over on Sunday and we decorated cookies! I hadn't done that in years. It was a blast! Since I'm not a very good baker, I bought my gingerbread men pre-baked. Cop out, I know. Here are the ones that I made.

cookies1

cookies2

I found out that my friends ate their creations, but I'll be sad to devour mine! Plus there's so much icing on there, I'd probably go into sugar shock.

Anyway, onto the NICE part of this post! I spotted this story on my friend Brooke's Facebook page and I knew it was perfect Operation NICE material.

Secret Santa spreads joy, disbelief in Kansas City

It's about the anonymous Santa who hands out $100 bills to strangers in Kansas City. How amazing is that?! And he's not the first. Apparently he took over for Larry Stewart, the original Kansas City Secret Santa, who handed out over a million bucks each December. This story will have you reaching for your tissue box and reaffirming your faith in humanity!

From the article:
"It's hard to come by," Turner said looking in disbelief at the $200 Secret Santa had given her.

Then one of Santa's "elves" — another tall man in a red cap — sidled up to next to Turner, asked a few questions, and handed her an additional $100. Turner, whose children are 3 and 8, was overcome.

"I can only afford one gift for each child. But now ...." she said, wiping tears from her cheeks and reaching out for a hug.

Wow. Just wow. I wish I had the finances available to do this, don't you?

The Positivity Project - My Experience

Insanely long post warning!

If you've been reading my blog for more than a few weeks, then you probably know (from me drilling it into your brains) that I was a finalist in the Amway Positivity Project. To quickly recap, some awesome judges chose my submission to make it into the top 25 semi-finals. And then after weeks of pestering you all for votes, I found out that I made the top ten. Holy....frijoles. The person with the most votes would be named the Grand Prize winner and take home $10K to promote positivity, while the nine runners up would leave with $2500, which is also, not too shabby! I just had to wait four more weeks to find out.

NICE Person of the Week: Miranda

I'm not sure why I always seem to forget about doing "NICE Person of the Week" posts. I really love sharing them with you! Okay, so I'm vowing to keep up with them. If I forget, remind me, okay?

This nomination comes from a friend of mine, Amy, who is on the advisory board of Girls on the Run of Stark County. Girls on the Run "provides pre-adolescent girls with the necessary tools to embrace their individual strengths as they enter middle and high school." She nominated Miranda, a wonderful young lady. (photo: Miranda is in the pink, Amy is on the left.)

What makes Miranda so NICE:
Meet Miranda! Miranda has been in my Girl Scout troop and was also one of the first girls to join my Girls on the Run team. Miranda regularly volunteers once every two weeks at a local nursing home. When she was appointed leader for a recent Girl Scouts meeting, she took the opportunity to tell the other girls about her volunteer work at House of Loreto in Canton, Ohio. She asked all of the girls to create greeting cards for the residents and then invited them all to come help out with her.

At school, Miranda rejects the idea that we should choose our friends based on looks or popularity and instead befriends those who are friendliest. She has many friends who are developmentally disabled and often ostracized by others. She is incredible at finding the good in others and focusing only on that. She makes everyone around her proud to be themselves and proud to be her friend.

At Girls on the Run, we regularly hear her encourage other girls as they make their laps around the track. Many of the girls are inspired by her positivity and hard work. When Miranda feels like she can no longer run, she skips. If she notices someone feeling left out, she'll invite them to join her for a lap. During our Girls on the Run meetings, we discuss issues that affect the girls--bullying, making healthy choices, positive self-talk, building positive relationships, and more. Nearly every time I ask a question, Miranda has a great answer. If someone else gave the response she would like to give, she's been known to say: "I liked her answer! I was going to say that too! Good job!" At the end of practice, she often gives energy awards to the girls who struggled or the ones who really worked hard that day.

What an incredible spirit this beautiful young woman has! I feel like you don't often find such positivity in youth today, so I'm truly inspired by Miranda's words and actions. And I'm sure I'm not the only one! Thank you, Miranda, for being SO NICE!

NICE Campaign: The Angel Giving Tree

I wrote about this project last year, and I think it's so wonderful, so I participated again this year.

angel giving tree

The Salvation Army and JCPenney have teamed up once again for the Angel Giving Tree program. You can visit the website and search for an "angel" (a needy child or senior) in your area, or any area really, check out their wishlist, and select one to adopt for the holidays.

This is the perfect holiday program for me. I mentioned before that I don't really have many people to shop for, and I'd love to help make someone else's holiday a little bit brighter. But since it's all done online, I don't even have to venture out into the freezing cold!

So earlier today, I adopted a 9 year old boy in Philadelphia. He needed a new winter coat and wanted Hot Wheels Tub Racers. I went to the JCPenney website, picked out both, and had it shipped directly to the local Salvation Army, who will distribute the gifts on my behalf. It only took five minutes of my time to put two presents underneath that boy's tree.

angel giving tree

I hope you'll consider adopting an angel! Time's running out. You only have until December 10th if you want to purchase a gift or December 14th if you're giving a gift card. If you participate, I'd love to know who you adopted and what you got for them! :)

NICE Testimonial: A Cup of Kindness

Today's testimonial comes from Elyse, and it absolutely warms my heart! Which is much needed for this frigid day.

Today was one of those days that kind of got off to a rough start. My favorite pair of jeans totally split down the leg. There must be some sort of invisible seam there or something. Anyways, I went to do some errands before class at Target. The lovely smell of Starbucks was tempting me, so I decided to go in. I remarked to my friend, Emma, who was with me, how much I liked this cup Starbucks had on display. I decided against buying it and went on ordering my drink.

The man behind me picked up the cup and remarked how nice it was. He then proceeded to ask the barista how much it was. Being told it was $10 he said okay and purchased it. He then turned around and handed the cup to me with a simple "Merry Christmas" and walked away.

I was absolutely gobsmacked. I did not know what to say. I just said thank you and Merry Christmas. I then proceeded to buy the next person's drink because this simple act of kindness touched my heart so much. I know it's the holidays and everyone has the spirit, but wouldn't life be a little better if we passed on little acts of kindness through out the year? It genuinely touched my heart and I will always remember how this act turned my day completely around. And to that anonymous gentleman out there, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I know I say this a lot, but how freaking awesome is that??? This is one of my favorite testimonials. I love how the man was mindful of the opportunity to be kind, and then he took initiative and made it happen! Doesn't a story like this make you wish you had the chance to make someone's day like that? The world would be so much happier if there were more people like that kind man. I hope you guys feel as inspired as I do!

NICE Assignment: Spread Good News

NICE Assignment
Hi everyone! How was your weekend? I am absolutely floored that we're already into the month of December. I haven't even have a chance to put up my Christmas tree. You know what that means? The longer I wait, the longer into 2011 it'll stay up!

I thought this week's assignment was a really cute one. My coworker and I were chatting a week or so ago, and she said, "Oh Melissa! I thought of an assignment that you could do on your blog!" She then told me about how after I raved about TEDxPhilly and shared with her some of the awesome stories I heard, she printed out an article about the West Philly Hybrid X team, an amazing after-school program, to read on her train ride. She said the article was so inspiring, that instead of throwing it out (or recycling it), she left it on the seat so another person could be inspired. It was an easy way to spread good news!

Today's Assignment: Spread Good News

Good news is hard to come by! I have to scour news sites for something positive. So what if we all shared a piece of good news with others? We could print out an article that moves us, and then leave it on public transportation, or tack it to the grocery store bulletin board, or place it in a waiting room for a doctor's office. I printed out this article and taped it inside a bathroom stall. :)

I love leaving NICE Notes for people, so why not leave some NICE News also! You can search the NICE News tag for some articles that I've enjoyed, or you can try the Good News Network for some other wonderful stories. I think it's a really easy (and basically free) way to let others know that there really are happy things going on in this world.

Will you give it a shot? Do you have any ideas for creative places you can leave an article?

NICE Tips: Share a quarter (or two)

I recently received an email from Jessica and Jake of Springfield, MO, who let me know that they make dates out of spreading NICE Notes around bookstores, flea markets, and restaurants. How cute is that?? And to kick it up a notch, they transformed their advent calendar into a kindness calendar, filled with slips of paper with nice tasks. Love it!

She shared with me one of her favorites: "Place quarters in toy, candy & arcade machines."

Genius! I remember being a kid and hovering over those toy machines like they were filled with diamonds and giving my mom puppy dog eyes while whining an elongated, "Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?" So I can imagine how it would have felt to walk up to one only to discover that the change had already been placed in the slot(s)!

So as I was leaving the grocery store last night, the group of candy and toy machines caught my eye. I picked out my favorite (keychains with little plush animals), popped two quarters into the slots, and went along on my merry way. I hope it brightens someone's day!

Thanks to Jessica and Jake for sending me this tip! I hope you all consider trying it out the next time you pass one of these machines. :)

NICE Testimonial: What Goes Around

Today's testimonial comes from Cindy F. of Abilene, Texas and it includes not one, but two acts of kindness! And it goes to show you that what goes around really does come around.

Recently I was at a grocery store and had picked up some items that totaled to just under $10. I tried to use my debit card and the clerk told me it wouldn't take it. I was so embarrassed and disappointed because they were basic necessities. I told the clerk I was sorry and was about to walk off when the lady behind me paid for my items! I was so touched I could feel a lump in my throat! It was such a nice thing to do and I thanked her over and over again.

Then I remembered, about a year ago, I was at a Goodwill store. I was about to step up to the cashier when the lady in front me told the clerk she didn't have enough money to buy her items, which were gifts for her friends. She left the bag there and told the clerk she would be back later. I decided, she really wanted those items and I paid for them. I quickly took off out of the store and caught up with her. She was elderly and walking home. I gave her the bag and said these are for you! She thanked me again and again. It made me feel good because I truly believe that what goes around comes around. Do good for others and someone just might do something good for you someday. And if nobody doesn't, who cares! Better to give than receive, right?!

I'll bet Cindy left that situation at the Goodwill store just as happy as the woman who she helped! Doing nice deeds always makes me feel giddy, don't you agree? So I'm curious, has this sort of thing ever happened to any of you guys? Has anyone ever rescued you at the register? Were you ever the rescuer?

NICE News: Grateful People are Happier & Healthier

I'm sure most of you know that feeling grateful coincides with feeling happy. That's the reason why people keep gratitude journals and make love lists. Focusing on the positive things in our lives washes away the gloom of the negatives. Well, in case you were skeptical, there is now scientific research that proves that people who act grateful lead happier and healthier lives. (Sidenote: I wish I were a psychologist so I could work on studies like this!)

This article ("Thank You. No, Thank You.) from the Wall Street Journal discusses the research that assistant professor of psychology at Hofstra University, Dr. Jeffrey Froh, and his colleagues compiled through various studies on gratitude.

From the article:
Being grateful also forces people to overcome what psychologists call the "negativity bias"—the innate tendency to dwell on problems, annoyances and injustices rather than upbeat events. Focusing on blessings can help ward off depression and build resilience in times of stress, grief or disasters, according to studies of people impacted by the Sept. 11 terror attacks and Hurricane Katrina.

There's even a little "How Grateful Are You?" quiz that you can take. But I think generally you'd know whether or not you're a grateful person without taking the test. :) I love the infographic included with the article which has techniques to help kids be grateful. Honestly, their recommendations work just as well for adults!

If you have a few minutes to spare, I definitely recommend taking a look at the article and let me know what you think! Did you learn anything from it? I think I want to try the Naikan self-reflection exercise.
