NICE Testimonial: Paying It Forward

Hi everyone! I have a really lovely testimonial for you all today. A few weeks ago, Shirley H. emailed me this story about how a stranger's kindness caught her completely off guard.

I wanted to tell you about something wonderful that happened to me about 8 months ago. I was at my local grocery store after work. I was very tired and just wanted to check out and get home. I was in the check out line just staring into space when the cashier pulled on my cart and said, "Ma'am?" I told her I was sorry. I was tired and "zoning out." I looked up and saw her taking my groceries out of the cart and checking them through. I was a little confused because the young man in front of me was still standing at the check out. The cashier smiled and said, "he's paying for your groceries." I laughed and said, "Oh yeah, sure." He looked at me, smiled and said, "have a great day." He then walked away.

When I got up to the cash register to pay I looked at the screen and saw $0.0 as my charge. I asked the cashier what I owed and she said, "I told you. He paid for your groceries." I was astounded. I looked for him but he had already left the store. A manager came over and said, "Oh, he does this a lot. We never know when he'll come in or how he chooses whose groceries he'll pay for. One time the person's order was $200.00 and he paid for that. He's just a nice person!" I told her the next time he came in to please tell him that I said thank you and that I would for sure "pay it forward" by doing something for someone else. Maybe not paying for groceries, but something.

That evening I wrote a letter to the editor of our local newspaper telling the story I just told you. My letter was printed. Several people who know me called to ask if it was true. I said it was, and that I hoped reading my story would prompt them to do something "just because" for someone else. I won't tell you what I've done since that day for others because in my religion, the highest good act is the one where no one, not even the recipient, knows who did the deed.

Isn't it amazing that some man is out there acting as the grocery fairy?! I think I'd probably have the same reaction as Shirley. It's something I'd never expect. Have you ever done (or thought about doing) something similar? I'd love to hear about it!

NICE Stuff: The Paper Couturière

I love me some paper goods. Probably because I (used to) make them. But there's just something about notecards, journals, prints, etc. that make me super duper happy.

You know what else makes me happy? Kindness, duh! And charity, duh! So when you combine paper, kindness, and charity, well, I can barely contain myself! That is precisely what Autumn at The Paper Couturière did with her new prints.

Through the end of August, she is selling her lovely Nice Prints for $12, and "100% of the profits from each print will be donated to a charity of YOUR choosing." What's really neat is the fact that you can specify what color you would like on your print. That means I can have blue in my living room, purple in my kitchen, and green in my bedroom! :)

I'm particularly fond of this one:

Visit Autumn's blog for more details on the prints and information on ordering your own. And you should probably follow her on Twitter because she is such a happy, positive person! Thanks Autumn!

NICE Testimonial: Pittsburgh Rocks!

I spent this last weekend in Pittsburgh, visiting one of my BFF's, Devon, and attending the Secret Agent L big identity reveal party.

I had such a fantastic time! So first, I will admit that I knew who Secret Agent L was prior to the reveal because I had been following her personal blog for a while and was able to put two and two together. :) So we met up on Friday evening for cocktails. And that's where she introduced me to Jennie.

On Saturday I had plans to wreak havoc on Pittsburgh with Devon, however Devon is a self-proclaimed city-avoider. (Though I do know she can throw an amazing suburban BBQ. Haha!) So the two of us, along with my husband Rob, wandered the streets of Pittsburgh with no real plan aside from sweating our butts off. That's when Jennie and her boyfriend Rob rescued us with their air conditioned car!

Jennie and Rob sacrificed their Saturday to chauffeur around three strangers, showing off some super neato spots of the city that we most certainly never would have stumbled across on our own!

While having a bite to eat after the wonderful Secret Agent L reveal party, and even after enduring hours of booger stories from my husband (don't ask!), Jennie and Rob offered to pick us up at our hotel the next morning to take us to brunch! It was insanely delicious, as they described, and they even drove us to Mt. Washington for a breath-taking view of the city afterward.

Rob and I are so grateful to have met these two super NICE and generous individuals, who also happened to be really kick ass people! We only hope we can return the favor one day!

NICE Gesture!

One of our readers, Cheryl in New York City, sent me an email today saying that she made a $100 donation to The Hunger Project in honor of the Operation NICE Blogiversary!

How awesome is that?!

So that brings the grant total donation up to $258! I don't think there are enough exclamation points to show how thrilled I am!!!!! :)

Thanks so much for your support Cheryl!

My Blogiversary Celebration!

First of all, I have to thank you guys SO MUCH for sending in your NICE Note photos! They made me smile all day. It's so cool to think that a lot of people smiled a little extra yesterday due to your kind deeds. I can't thank you enough. You really are the reason why this blog exists at all. Without other people supporting niceness, it'd just be me rambling to myself. I hope that I can continue blogging for another year, and hopefully much longer than that!

We had a total of 29 people who participated in the Operation NICE Blogiversary NICE Note drop, which means a $87 donation to The Hunger Project. But you know, I was prepared to make a $100 donation, and that's exactly what I'm going to do. So along with Jeni and Aimee's pledges, that'll be $158! Yay!

So, I didn't blog about what I did to celebrate last Thursday. I woke up early to prepare my NICE Note drops for the day. On the way into work, I stopped by the grocery store. I taped these three around the store along with an instant win lotto ticket. I hope they were lucky!

Then I took a trip to the ATM and left this one, along with a $5 Starbucks gift card. I felt like the cameras were watching me!

Then I tucked a note along with a lotto ticket under this person's windshield in the parking garage. The car was still there when I left for the day and the note was still on it!

Then I took a trip to LOVE Park. I knew I wanted to put a note on the LOVE statue, but I didn't want to get in trouble for touching the artwork. I snuck up there super quickly and taped it to the base. Luckily people are always taking photos of it, so it wasn't suspicious when I snapped a few of my own.

And last but not least, I left a note on the bench outside of my office building along with A Little Book of Thank Yous.

This assignment was so incredibly fun! I don't know why I don't do things like that more often! I really should just carry a bunch of those NICE Notes in my purse. Oh, and as an added sweet treat, I brought in a chocolate cream pie to work to share with my team at our biweekly meeting. We all scarfed that niceness down real fast!

Thanks again for taking time to visit my little corner of the web. I never thought when I started this project that it would get such great reception. But every day I see proof of kindness, and that just makes me want to promote it louder and prouder! Hugs to you all!

NICE Notes!

This NICEsplosion came from Raven of teh blog Discovering the Dance of Life, One Step at a Time. She went all out! Just look at all of these notes! She even upcycled some yellow cardstock that had been in her recycling bin. She's going to keep a stash of these with her for when the time for a NICE Note seems appropriate. That's what I need to do. Thanks for the inspiration, Raven! You rock!

Continued! So I had a little web trouble for a day or so. Turns out I was a dope and forgot to renew my domain name. Whoopsie! That meant my website and email were not working. So I have a few extra NICE Notes that weren't able to get published. I'll finish them up today! Here are a few of them.

This one came from Carla, who left it in her mailbox for the postman to find:

And this one is from Tiffany, who left the note on a table at Pinkberry:

And this one is from Rachel, who stuck it on the mirror at at public restroom. She said she has some more in her car for when the opportunity strikes. :)

NICE Notes!

After I went to sleep last night, I had two more NICE Note submissions. This one comes from Autumn of The Paper Couturière in Australia. She left these around her neighborhood. Or I should say, "neighbourhood." :) Thanks Autumn!

Lots of love for Philly today! Glad to see my city getting represented well. :) Kathryn in Philadelphia sent me these photos this evening. One in the ladies' room at her office and the other in the gym locker room. Back in the day when I actually went to the gym, I would have liked to see that note. Ha!

I was so excited when my BFF Kay told me she was going to be playing along, in hopes of helping to empty my wallet. :) So when I got her texts this afternoon with these two NICE Note pictures, I giggled!

The first was left on a subway map and the second was left in the Bourse Food Court, as Kay says, "The mecca of tourists." Thanks Kay! It means so much that you did this! HUGS!

This NICE Note photo is from my pal Lydia. It says "You are beautiful just the way you are!" and I think that's something that a lot of folks should hear more often. Thanks Lydia!

NICE Notes!

Erica took the assignment for the week and went a few steps further with it. I love what she did so much! This is the type of activity I would love to be doing with Operation NICE if I could do it full time. :) Here's the story, in her own words:

I was so inspired by your assignment, that I thought it was important to get our 4 children - 3 boys ages 10, 8, and 8, and a girl age 4 - involved in the Nice Revolution. :) I read them your mission and the assignment from your website, and asked them what they thought we should do. We decided to pick out some nice sayings and/or quotes and each take a stack of the notes with us this week, and either leave them places as we came upon them, or give them to people as they caught our eye.

Unfortunately that means I don't have any pictures of WHERE we placed them, because the kids took most of them, so I took a picture of the actual notes, before they were dispersed... there 8 different sayings, 24 nice notes in total.

The stories that have made it back to me are:
- one in the new neighbor's mailbox
- slipped one thru the slightly open window of a coworker's car in the parking lot at work
- one in the cubby of a boy at daycare who wasn't feeling well today
- one on the front door of our next door neighbor who was paralyzed in an car accident
- one in the bathroom of the local convenience store
- one in each of 4 shopping carts at the grocery store
- one in the rack of free papers outside the grocery store
- one to the neighborhood patrol officer
- one in the bin of stuffed bunnies at the Build a Bear store

It has been a wonderful teaching opportunity for the kids, and a nice experience for me as well.

Thank you so much, Erica! I am incredibly grateful for this activity you've done with your children. It's truly inspiring!

NICE Notes!

These NICE Note photos are from Julie B., a total sweetheart who I will definitely be looking up if I ever find myself in the Milwaukee area. ;) She cracked me up! Her email said, "These are three pictures of notes I put in the gym at my work, on machines and on the mirror in the ladies locker room. Taking a picture in the ladies locker room and hoping no one walks in on you is stressful!!" I sure hope the stress was worth it, Julie! Thank you for participating!
