NICE News: Giving Is Good for your Health

As you can tell, I took over a week off from blogging. I feel like I'm in a bit of a rut. Creatively. Professionally. Motivationally. I can't complain! Life is great! I'm not going through any drama or anything. But I feel like I need to explain why I haven't been around. I'm not quite sure why, but I feel like Operation NICE has been losing a bit of steam. Maybe it's because I'm distracted. Maybe it's because I feel like there's been less participation. I don't know. Tell me I'm wrong, please! Tell me I'm crazy and I need to get my butt in gear and start blogging again!!

I saw this article in Facebook today and had to share. It's about Cami, the fabulous founder of the 29-Day Giving Challenge. This NY Times article explains how giving is good for your health. Volunteerism, generosity, helping others can all have positive effects on a person's well-being.

And I thought this was pretty interesting:
By contrast, being self-centered may be damaging to health. In one study of 150 heart patients, researchers found that people in the study who had more “self-references” (those who talked about themselves at length or used more first-person pronouns) had more severe heart disease and did worse on treadmill tests.

Check out the article and get into the spirit of giving!

Maybe all those therapists who've been telling us to use "I" statements were wrong. :-) I happen to think that caring about people other than yourself can be an incredible boost to well-being. It's nice to know there are actually statistics to show being a nice, kind human being is truly good for you!

Thanks for the post! You have inspired me to join the movement - here goes nothing, 29 gifts in 29 days! :)

I think Operation Nice is definitely still active (even if there is less participation). This blog is bookmarked on my computer as a favorite website and I check it daily. This is not in the lease trying to pressure you to blog daily--it's just to let you know that your blog is part of my daily life that I use for inspiration and little tips on how put out more niceness in the world!

Have to agree with the comment above - I always get excited when I see you've posted something new and it's really inspired me since I found your website. I feel a lot happier :D

Hey Melissa, I for one LOVE Operation NICE. What you've created here (and are putting out into the world) is a unique, inspiring, positive and totally amazing force.

I really hope you keep going with it. Take care of yourself.

Take time for yourself, but do what the story is about~ give us 29 ON blog entries in 29 days! You'll feel better and we all will feel better.

Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukah or whatever you celebrate this time of the year!

Hi Melissa,

Sometimes, it's hard to see the ROI on our time and effort - but what you are doing with Operation Nice is positive and worthwhile. Every time you write a post, I get it in my inbox and read it, because I know it will lift my spirits. Don't feel forlorn, we all love you and the world is a better place for what you are doing in it.

I too love Operation Nice---not only for the uplifting stories, but also for the opportunity to be a part of a community of people who are actively working to create a better world. And I truly believe that the smallest act of kindness can have the most wonderful ripple effects!

As I mentioned in the story you posted from me last year, I'm still participating in the 25 day countdown by doing good deeds everyday until Christmas. Today I'm wrapping gifts at Barnes and Noble for Hospice. Little actions have big rewards.

Thank you so much for creating this community! You're fantastic!

Operation Nice is needed! You may be seeing less participation because you have done less blogging. I don't check every day any more because you aren't blogging as much. It's a vicious circle! But we need the blog!

I've been thinking about doing the 29 days and 29 gifts myself. I think it would be such an experience. Perhaps the time is now. I do enjoy your blog. Thanks for putting yourself out there.

I'm joining the crowd, I too love Operation NICE. It's always a joy to see a new post. I just want to say keep up the good work. The niceness is contagious, and I will try to be a more active reader!

Today I happily added the "I'm very nice" badge to my blog!

I'm finding this enthusiasm contagious! A body of research supports your idea. For example, Sonja Lyubomirsky found that people who demonstrated kindness experienced greater well-being, especially if they chose a variety of acts of kindness and executed them on one day during the week. Keep up the kindness!

Melissa: Kudos to you on taking a much needed week off! Look at what great stuff has happened since! In this internet "always on" age, we often forget that we need to "disconnect" once in a while to regroup, recharge and "get our groove back." I like to do this with One Hour Retreats at least once a week.
