When I was in grade school, I got the book "50 Ways Kids Can Save the World." I started cutting up plastic rings from Coke cans, putting soda bottles in our toilets, and begging my father to stop using Aquanet so abundantly. But somewhere on my journey to adulthood, I forgot about the earth-conscious Melissa of my youth. Helping the environment took a back seat to convenience.
Sure, we recycle. In fact, if my husband and I are out in an area without a recycle bin, he will bring the plastic bottle home with us. And yeah, we have fuel efficient cars and put on water-saving shower heads. But that's not much of a sacrifice. Maybe today is the day to start thinking, "What else?" Meaning, what else can I do to help join the global fight against climate change?
I thought I had mentioned this book here in the past, but I couldn't find the post, so if I have, forgive me! I think that New Day Revolution by the fine folks of Cool People Care might be the "50 Ways Kids Can Save the World" of my adulthood. This book is full of helpful tips that even the laziest environmentalist can use. For example:
- Replace your incandescent bulbs with florescent ones - done!
- When cooking, don't use a pan bigger than you need - never thought of that
- Buy green power, check your utility bill for details - we've been wanting to do this for a while
- If you forget your reusable shopping bag, be sure to recycle your plastic one - I save mine for this reason, just need to drop them off at my grocery store
- Bring reusable utensils with your lunch - I am guilty of abusing plastic utensils
- Fully inflating your car tires makes your fuel last longer - gotta do that soon
And there is so much more helpful advice! Things that you might never consider but are actually easy habits to form. I highly recommend you check out New Day Revolution and start making little changes in your life to benefit the earth in honor of Blog Action Day!

This is a great post! The book sounds very intriguing...
Ooo. That books is definitely on my list of wants now. Thanks for sharing!
:]
Once the deep mystery of “climate change” has been solved
And “What’s green and causes CC?” is no longer a popular riddle,
The legacy of the era most likely will be:
“Never in recorded history have so many made so much over so little”.
(With apologies to the late, great Winston Churchill).
I hope that they change everything around...
Hi! It's still October 15 here in my country. It's now 12:41pm --
This one is nice! I like the inflating the car tires. Thanks! I am bookmarking this. HaPPy Blog Action Day! Green is clean. :-)
Sounds like a great book and this was a great post! Thanks for sharing this info here. :)
Waitwaitwait...SODA BOTTLES IN THE TOILET?! What? I've never heard of that. What the heck does that do?
It displaces the water so you waste less when you flush. :)
Sorry I missed the Action Day but I just discovered your blog. Keep up the "nice" work. I love your blog. I'm nice and it's great to see someone celebrating niceness!
Thank you for your participation on "blog day"...ya done did good.
I'm from Canada. Yup...we litter and don't do enough to save our tiny earth too. I do make a personal extra effort and I'm aware of my surroundings.
I have a dear friend that literally washes soup cans and throws them in the garbage! I don't do that. ;-)
I visited the states. One dear family in particular. I was horrified at the waste. I mentioned this to one of them and he shrugged his shoulders like it was nothing. I was in near tears.
It truly takes so little to make a huge difference if EVERYONE helps out along the way.
Look around and see the little things that you can do to help us all out.
Use a cloth to wipe up the spill instead of three sheets of paper towel! Make the effort to take your empty bottles back to be recycled. Buy a mat made from recycled tires to encourage them to make more.
That's my rant...thanks. :-)
