NICE Day Recap

I'm alive! Just barely. I still feel absolutely horrendous, but life doesn't stop, so I'm pushing along. The worst part about this sickness is the cough, which is brutal to say the least and doesn't allow me to sleep at night. It's been about five days of crummy nights of sleep in a row, so I'm a total zombie crankypants. I even coughed my way through our weekend trip to NYC for Rob's birthday. It was fun, but it would have been more fun if I would have had the slightest bit of energy, and if Rob didn't completely resent me for keeping him up all night with my hacking. I know he was *this close* to smothering me with his pillow.

But enough complaining!!! I have to be on the road to recovery by now, right???

Despite my poor health, last Wednesday's Day of NICE was a blast! My Twitter pals Gloria and Eileen joined me in Rittenhouse Square for some flower distribution. We squatted in the park to attach all the tags, and went on our way. Thanks to my friend Crystal for taking pictures for us!

NICE Day

NICE Day!

NICE Day

So, I have to admit, I was shocked at the number of people who flat out refused the flower. We tried to explain that there was no catch, it was just a kind gesture, but they'd hold up their hand, shake their heads, and move on. But for every person like that, there was someone who was thrilled by the act. A few people asked about what Operation NICE is and agreed with the mission when it was explained.

I approached on couple, sitting along the wall and handed them flowers. The girl slowly took it while checking to see if I was crazy. The guy first refused, then changed his mind, then took his hand back. I explained what I was doing and the girl said, "Really, for free?" We had a conversation about how Philadelphia needs some more NICE people, and we're so accustomed to people expecting something in return. And hopefully that can change one day, where handing someone a flower isn't suspicious, it's just, well, nice.

I have so many emails I need to respond to! People who have sent me the things that they did for NICE Day last Wednesday. I have stories to share and posts to write. I'm not neglecting you, I promise. I'm just trying to regain some strength. It'll come in due time. :) I hope you all are doing well!

I've just stumbled across your site by accident, by finding your badge on a friends site. What a great idea! I love it!

Thanks for the flower tags - am going to do that this weekend with the sproglings!

I can't imagine that you and your friends really looked threatening or nutty in any way, so it's funny that people were reluctant to take the flowers. I guess we're just conditioned to be suspicious of things that seem too good to be true. But good for you in trying to change that!

It stinks that your little weekend trip was affected by an untimely illness. Same thing happened to me last October. We went away just for an overnighter for our 25th anniversary, and I had about 3 things wrong with me, including the start of a brand new fun heartburn condition that had me bursting into tears as I tried to order dinner at the B&B we were staying at. And yet we managed to have a wonderful time anyway, once we worked out the glitches. I suppose what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right? :-D

So true, Jan! And I did have a good time in NYC, wandering around, spending time with Rob. But the fantastic dinner which Rob said was the best sushi he had in his life, passed by me because I could barely eat it. Dang! Oh well, an excuse to go back!

Sad to tell you this, but the cough will last awhile~ and indeed it is the worst part. One *almost* wishes to go back to when you just felt crummy and didn't have the cough! :)

Regardless, feel better when you do and no later!

Melissa, You are absolutely beautiful (illness and all). I'll admit - I've been neglecting my e-world and thus haven't checked your blog in awhile.

My creative energy has been on high and I've had trouble sleeping...ironically, one of my recurring thoughts has been about ways to do random acts of kindness! I've been dreaming of little crafty things to make to keep with me that my kids & I can pass out to workers at the groccery store, Starbucks, folks on the street... I LOVE that I just got around to reading this entry and discovered your amazing day!

Thank you for being an inspiration for those of us who are looking to make kindness not only something we can do, but most importantly, something we are.

Feel better soon...

Yeah I guess I could imagine those who would refuse and that's sad :( I'm glad your nice day went well though. It sounded like a lot of fun! Thank you so much for sharing! :)

You're in the Philly area? You should stop by the PPA and hand out flowers to the folks who are waiting to get their cars out of the impound lot. Judging by what I've seen on A&E's "Parking Wars" TV series, a lot of kindness could go a LONG way in that place.

Kudos for at least trying to brighten-up peoples' days, though. I'm sure you must run into some people that truly appreciate it.

you are an amazing person. i can't wait to find a few hours so that i can hand out some flowers as well!

(ps - your cough sounds like my seasonal allergies. take a shot of apple cider vinegar (it's gross, i know) every morning, it'll help.

Good on you guys for handing out those flowers. It is surprising that some people resisted taking them. Such a shame for them really. It's great though that plenty of people did take them. I have no doubt you made their day and even better, spread the Operation NICE goodness!

here's wishing your recovery to speed up and allow you to be 100% again. :) I think what you did was so absolutely wonderful ... better than nice ... nice with a spoonful of hope and a dusting of magic, too!!

That is such a sweet idea. Sorry that there were so many that didn't go for it, that sucks. That's so wierd that someone would turn down a free flower.

Hope you feel better soon!
