NICE Tips: 10 Simple Ways to Show Kindness Online

Social Media Rockstar, Brett Borders, posted his 10 Simple Ways to Show Kindness Online. It was so cute that I had to share it!

There are some really interesting points in his post. Just like we always talk about the importance of compliments, and how nice it is to compliment a stranger on the street, the same goes for "virtual strangers," e.g. people who's blogs you read or tweets you follow. So chiming in now and then to say, "Thanks! What a great resource!" or "Very well written, good job!" is thoroughly appreciated. I probably don't have to tell most of you. You are always quick to chime in and say when you enjoy one of my posts! And I'm the luckiest gal to have you all stopping by!

I need to improve on a few of these points. Like responding to everyone. Lord knows I have trouble keeping up with that! But I try to be as nice as possible in the virtual world. I am certainly a serial exclamation mark user, so hopefully my sentences come off as friendly and happy (and not shouty).

I love when people comment on my Tweets, so I need to do the same. Like this morning:

Be sure to check out the 10 Simple Ways to Show Kindness Online and start putting them into effect, if you haven't already!

Great list. I was pleased to see I naturally do most of them. In fact, I'm obviously part of a great group of bloggers because I find they all do most of them too!

Well, I think I speak for a ton of people when I say how much we appreciate what you do here at Operation Nice. I love sitting down at my computer at night getting inspired to do good. THANK YOU.

Kindness and niceness is good wherever you can find it or give it. I can't, however, get onboard with all the online stuff. I was an adult when I first met a computer so I don't have the same feelings about it as so many who grew up with it. I use it every day but it is a tool not my life! I can't do emoticons for the life of me. I don't condemn others for using them but they look extremely fake coming out of my keyboard! Can't help it...I just like WORDS (and spelling.) I've made online friends but somehow they don't seem real till I meet them. Terms of endearment...can't do that either. I feel like it's too generic. Still I do see a lot of nastiness online that I think comes out due to the anonymity. We should always be NICE but I'll take mine in person first!

Yeah, I know what you mean, Cheryl. I'd rather have a real hug than a "{{{HUG}}}", but sometimes when you can't be face to face, it's a nice substitution. So many of my friends live far away, and it's easy to keep in touch through emails. So emailing someone that I miss them is my way of trying to be sincere.

I try to limit my emoticon use. But sometimes I'll make a joke that doesn't really come across right in text, so I'll throw in a little smiley so people know I mean it in a light-hearted fashion. But I try not to overuse them! (I do, however, overuse exclamation points!!!!)
