NICE Assignment: National Volunteer Week

NICE Assignment
April 19-25 is National Volunteer Week, so of course the assignment had to follow along those lines. Now, I've already written a previous assignment about volunteering. So just to make things a little bit easier on me during these last crazy three days of work before my big project is complete, let's revisit that post!

Yeah, it's a bit last minute to throw together some sort of volunteering event. Don't have time this week? How about taking the few minutes to support someone who IS volunteering!

One of my readers, Laura, is participating in her local Relay for Life to support the American Cancer Society. She and her team designed t-shirts (see picture at right) to help raise money! Check it out here. Don't need a t-shirt? Her team is also accepting donations, and remember, every dollar helps!

And two of my friends are participating in the March of Dimes March for Babies.

The first is my neighbor, Leah, who will be walking in Philadelphia this Sunday. Click here to sponsor Leah.

And the second is my wonderful friend, Devon, who will be participating in the march in Pittsburgh on May 9th. Click here to sponsor Devon.

If you have a few spare dollars in your pocket this month, please pledge to help one of these wonderful ladies! And if you're participating in one of these events, jot me an email and I'll add you to the list! Thanks!!

EDIT: And let's not forget about Melissa, the amazing organizer of the Philly Twestival! She's participating in the Philly Arthritis Walk. Click here to sponsor her!

Awesome! I'm not participating in either of these events, but I'm walking in the Philly Arthritis Walk next month on May 17.

If you're on Crate & Barrel's mailing list, you might have received an email about donating $25 (on them) to a project of your choice at www.donorschoose.org. It was in my inbox this morning, and it's a great way to help teachers get resources for their students and classrooms :)

That's a great idea! I will be volunteering my hair next week. Well, my hair is pretty long, and I will be donating to Locks of Love or a program similar to it. Haven't decide it yet. Yikes! But surely worth it!

Wish me luck!

Hi there,

There's an empty lot across from my apartment and I contacted the owner to see if I could use it for a Community Garden. He said YES!

I'm organizing the first Community Victory Garden in Historic Uptown Butte Montana. It will be dedicated to our Armed Forces (My brother is currently serving in Iraq and my son is in Afghanistan).

I'm currently working with the managers at our local Wal Mart who've basically given me a blank check for all the tools and supplies we'll need. The County Extension Service is providing over 20 Master Gardeners who will design and help plant the garden. The County is also supplying the dirt and trucks we need to get it started. A local sign maker will donate signs. The high school shop students are building three metal/wood benches for it. The local Boy Scouts will be building a fence. The Humane Society is donating bag dispensers and garbage pickup for the attached "poo park" we're planning for doggies.

The members of the neighborhood will each get their own patch of garden to take care of and harvest if they wish. Everything will be donated. Any excess will be given to the local food bank.

The name of the garden is SPROUT and we're hoping it will encourage others to start gardens in their community.

xo.

I volunteered at my local Boys and Girls Club for a few hours in the afternoon this past week. It was a blast! The kids were working on their Presidential Fitness Challenge and I got to count how many jumps they could do while jumproping for a minute. The Boys and Girls Club is a great way to volunteer in your community and really lend a hand to your neighbors!
