NICE Assignment: Give Life

NICE Assignment
Good morning! I'm actually in a bit of a rush today. I have to run to the courthouse to contest my speeding ticket. Ugh. Never a fun event. But I had to get in a quick assignment for the week.

Today's Assignment: Give Life
Only 5% of eligible people in the U.S. donate blood every year, but the demand is so much greater than the supply. Have you ever done it? I haven't. Unfortunately I don't meet the weight requirements. But as soon as I can bulk up a little, I'm signing up!

Maybe in these tough economic times, reaching into your pocket and donating money isn't an option for you. Well, giving blood is free, and it could save someone's life.

Visit this website to learn more about ways you can help.

From the site:
Imagine if giving blood was part of everyone's life. Something you did on a regular basis, like eating at your favorite restaurant. What kind of difference would that make? For nearly 5 million people who receive blood transfusions every year, your donation can make the difference between life and death.

Great idea! I also suggest donating platelets, if you have the time. (It takes approx. 2 hours) Unlike whole blood, platelets only last about 4 days and will be given immediately to someone in need, usually cancer patients. Your body also replaces platelets in about 2 days vs. a couple of weeks for whole blood, which means you can donate more often.

I donate regularly at the UCLA blood and platelet center in LA. They give gift certificates as a thank you for your time (you get to choose between movie passes or starbucks or coffee bean/tea leaf or In N Out burger or Jamba Juice). You also get to watch a movie while you donate--they have a huge library and each donation bed had it's own tv.

Its so easy to do so much good.

I always thought donating blood was too gross for me to do, until I ended up donating a whole kidney! Coming from the most needle-phobic person in the world, after you do it once, it gets easier and it's so important. Donate whatever you can; people really do need it!

Wow, Julia! Your donation center sounds great! My husband went recently to donate blood and wasn't exactly pleased. There was no soap in the bathroom, which freaked him out. Luckily there's a new donation center nearby, so hopefully that one will be better! I wonder if there is a weight requirement for platelets.

Pollyanna cowgirl - You donated a kidney?! That's amazing! I suppose a needle is nothing compared to surgery! Go you!

Great cause - I would donate if I could, but sadly in the UK you can't donate if you've received blood before... I think it's around the mid 90s. I've had blood transfusions before the cutoff date anyway.

Annoying really, as I'd like to be able to give something back, as it were.

I just found your sit today. I love this concept and just wrote a post about it on my blog. What a great idea! Thanks for your inspiration and free downloads. I am printing some to stash in my purse as I type this.

Giving blood is great. And the best part is (aside from helping others) are the cookies afterward.
