I don't know if any of you saw, but in the current issue of Real Simple, there was a section where authors wrote letters to Santa from certain points in their lives. It has been quite a while since I had written a letter to Santa, and I thought it would be a really fun assignment for the week!
Today's Assignment: Write a Letter to Santa
Pretty self-explanatory. What's your Christmas list? What would you ask Santa for, if you had the opportunity. I had a lot of fun doing this one, so I hope you decide to participate as well!
Dear Santa,Hey, what’s up? It’s been a while since I’ve written. Sorry about that. It’s been a busy 20 years. But thanks for all the great Christmases I’ve had. I really have gotten all that I’ve wanted and more. That iMac that you hid behind the tree in 1999 might have been my favorite gift of all. Although the washer/dryer combo from three years ago was also a big hit.
So Santa, I’ve been trying to be extra good this year. I’ve been heavy on the “nice” and light on the “naughty”; I think you’d be proud. I don’t want to be too greedy, so I’m keeping my list short. All that good stuff (like world peace) is a given, so I didn’t bother including them. You know how I feel about that. Anyway, here’s what I’d like.
- Focus – I’ve been having a little trouble lately getting things done. I think there are so many items on my to-do list, that I’ve been a bit overwhelmed. So if you could help me get back on track, that would be great.
- Stress relief – Every year I say I’m going to do a better job at taking care of myself, but it never really happens. I’d like to be able to take more time to relax so I stay sane.
- Help my aunt – My mom’s sister over in Korea has been having some tough times lately. She’s always been so good to me, even on the other side of the world, so if you could make sure she and her three kids have a great holiday, I’d appreciate it.
- A dance partner – Over the last year I’ve discovered all the awesomely fun indie rock dance parties in Philly, but it’s difficult for me to find people to accompany me. So if you could, please send me a friend that likes to do that stuff.
- A night stand – I’d like a place to put my lamp and alarm clock.
- Winning lotto numbers for my parents – They already told me their plan for when they win. They are going to start a non-profit, and I get to be the Executive Director.
- Something unexpected – I haven’t experienced a real surprise in a while, and I don’t care if it’s flowers from Rob, or an email from an old friend, or snow on Christmas morning, I’d love a surprise!
- The ability to make a difference – This year has taught me a lot. I’ve come to the realization that I want to do something meaningful with my life. If you could send me an amazing, life-changing opportunity, that’d be awesome.
- Oh, and Rock Band 2.
Well, I think that’s about it. I’d be okay with any of these. Numbers 3, 6, and 8 are my top picks. But if you’re too busy figuring out world peace, I understand.
Thanks a bunch,
Melissa

Great letter!! Now I'm wondering what I should ask for...?
You should ask for winning lotto numbers for my parents. :-) Hey, I could use all the help I can get!
You'd be a great ED. How about winning lottery numbers for everyone!? I know the real-life logistics on that would be squirrely, but Santa has a way of helping things work out nicely. Fun list!
I love your letter! I was planning to post something similar this week as well, but now you've inspired me to get cracking!
(Did you know M*acy's has mailboxes in their stores, and for every letter collected they are donating a dollar to the Make a W*ish Foundation? I think that's pretty *nice*! I wonder if "grown-up" letters count!?)
What a great idea and I love your letter - very clever :-)
cute! i read "night stand" as "have a one night stand." dunno why. what a gutter head. :/
Great list, and I like the bangs!
Tidbit alert!
In 1974, staff at Canada Post's Montreal office were noticing a considerable amount of letters addressed to Santa Claus coming into the postal system, and those letters were being treated as undeliverable. Since those employees did not want the writers, mostly young children, to be disappointed at the lack of response, they started answering the letters themselves. The amount of mail sent to Santa Claus increased every Christmas, up to the point that Canada Post decided to start an official Santa Claus letter-response program in 1983. Approximately one million letters come in to Santa Claus each Christmas, including from outside of Canada, and all of them are answered, in the same languages in which they are written. Canada Post introduced a special address for mail to Santa Claus, complete with its own postal code:
SANTA CLAUS
NORTH POLE H0H 0H0
CANADA
its been a while since i have commented. i still read your blog daily. love it. well done. love the assignments!
My husband is an extremely talented chef that oozes creativity with comfort foods! Jealous yet? hehe
Anyway he needs a job with a great company that will treat him with the respect that he deserves. He's been home for 7 months now. Crazy, when he's worked his tail off for over 19 years.
That's on my high on my wishlist this year :)
Hope everyone has a great Holiday! :~D

A quick glance at your list almost made me choke. You see, I read #5 as "A One Night Stand". Yeah, that one got my attention. LOL.
I knew that "night stand" was going to catch a few people off guard! I should have asked for a dresser!
Thanks, that was fun and got me thinking, I'm going to ask my husband to write a letter too :)
That was a fun exercise - thanks for this week's assignment: http://tinyurl.com/5fwene
Writing Santa is a perfect way to put some future thoughts out to the Universe! Love it, Melissa.
A few things on my list
1) The sun back. It's 4:30 and pitch dark in Seattle.
2) RSS subscribers! Santa, spread the word for me in stockings, will you?
3) I putting in a vote for surprises as well. And deep belly laughs where the tears roll. And those moments when your heart swells with love for someone. Lots of that!
Another great assignment! I love your list. I've posted mine here:
