NICE Assignment: Leave a Comment

I enjoy making charitable contributions when I can afford it. Even though times are tough, I do know that I will be getting a small (very small) monetary gift from my employer. However, instead of taking that money and blowing it at Starbucks on a new reusable mug, I thought I should put it to better use.

Lately I’ve seen a few blog owners participating in a “Cans for Comments” type of project. I thought that was such a wonderful idea! But since I just did my neighborhood food drive and completely wiped out my cupboards of any canned items, I wanted to put a little twist on it.

Today’s Assignment: Leave a Comment

So here’s what I’m going to do. For every comment I receive on this blog post by midnight on Thursday, December 18th (eastern time), I will donate $1 to a deserving charity. I told this plan to my husband and he exclaimed, “What if you get 700 comments!” Okay, not likely, but I do have a cap, just in case. I won’t mention what it is because I really do want to receive as many comments as possible.

You may be asking, what charity will the money be going to? That’s where you come in. Below I have listed five of my favorite charities. Click on the links, decide which you think is deserving of your dollar, and then leave your comment with the charity name. On the morning of December 19th, I’ll tally up the votes and the winning charity will receive the “dollar per comment” donation.

And that's it! One vote per person please, but feel free to tell everyone you know about it! Thanks for participating!

(Also, if there are any people or businesses out there that would be interested in matching the donation or funding the possible cap-overage, let me know!)

What a wonderful thing to do! :-) All deserving but I choose "Back on my feet". This one stands out for me because of a recent testimonial you posted about a submitter having a meal with a homeless man.

All of the charities you have chosen are great. I decided upon Children for Children. The more people in the world that grow up learning about volunteering and giving back, the more caring and sharing we will have in the future.

Being Nice Goes a Long Way :)

What a great idea! I'm voting for Feeding America. With our economy, it's becoming ever more difficult for families to support themselves. As a teacher, I see kids everyday whose only meals come from what they eat at school. Eating 3 meals a day can make so much of a difference!
Thank you!!

What a wonderful idea. You're not quite at 700 comments yet, but this is already adding up to quite a nice donation!

Your post reminded me that I wanted to look at my donations made in the past year. I'm quite taken by the idea of donating 1% of your income to charity. 1% is so little to me but if you imagine how much money 1% of the total income of 1 country is... enough to do a lot of good work! So I guess I have some donating to do...

My vote is for Heifer.

I like this idea a lot! It's concrete action, which is what we need in this age of apathy and disconnection. Personally, I'm hoping you donate to Feeding America, because while the other causes are surely worthy, I think it's awful that we send so much money overseas yet refuse to face the problems we have here at home. Poverty and hunger are not problems for people "over there," they are problems everywhere!
