NICE Testimonial: The Boss with a Big Heart

Have you visited The Serendipity Factory? If not, I highly recommend you venture over there and have a look around. It's one of the most inspirational sites I have ever seen!

From Tammy and Traci, the creators of the site:
We created this site to be a resource for encouragement and inspiration, especially for girls, teens and women who seek a warm place and positive thoughts. In this space we also like to honor and recognize people for being true to themselves and their dreams, as well as those trying to make a difference in the world.

Fabulous, right? Well, the other day, Traci of The Serendipity Factory sent me a NICE Testimonial of her own. Check it out.

I wanted to share with you the nicest thing anyone has every done for me.

I used to be the secretary to the president of a company. He was a very smart and unpretentious man, with a dry sense of humor and a "cut to the chase" communication style. While he was liked and respected -- most people probably wouldn't have known how big his heart is.

He was the father of six grown children, was very much in love with his wife, and had a strong appreciation of family. We shared a connection because I was from Montana, he had a ranch in Wyoming and we both have small town values and loved "going home" to the beautiful mountains.

I was at the airport one day, and of all things, I ran into my boss. He was leaving for a business meeting and stopping to see his Dad along the way, and I was flying home to see my Grandpa. We made small talk while waiting, and through the course of our conversation he learned that my Grandpa occupied a large space in my heart.

About 3 months later, I lost my Grandpa to cancer and I was devastated. I notified my boss that I wouldn't be coming in to work. I told a friend at the office I wouldn't be able to go home for the funeral because the flight was too expensive, even with the bereavement fare. Somehow, word got back to my boss of my situation. He called me at home, said he cancelled his meetings for the afternoon, and told me to meet him at the Northwest ticket counter at the airport.  He dropped everything for me, made all of my arrangements, gave me an expense paid flight home so I could be with my family to say goodbye to my Grandpa.

To this day, I still nearly cry when I think about his generosity, and how much it meant to me to be able to attend my Grandpa's funeral.

Are you weeping yet? This gets to me because it makes me think about how difficult a time it was when I lost my grandmother a few years ago. She really was one of my favorite people in the world. It's wonderful that Traci's boss understood the importance of being with family during a time like that, and I'm sure his generous act will never be forgotten.

Thank you Melissa for sharing these stories - yep, today brought tears to my eyes too, but I realized they're good tears - the kind that come with love and hope and inspiration.

That makes me so glad! I'm at a big conference today surrounded by CEO's and fancy folks, and it's nice to hear that a very-important-person took time out to help someone. :)

Had I a boss like that, I probably wouldn't have started my own company. That's the type of employer I'll strive to be.
