October 15th, 2008 is Blog Action Day 08. What does this mean, you ask? It means that thousands of bloggers around the world will unite to post about one global issue in order to raise awareness. This year's issue is poverty.
Not to get too deep into it now (I'll save that for October 15th), but the issue of poverty hits very close to home. My husband is a school teacher in Camden, NJ which has 38% of it's population living in poverty. It is one of the poorest cities in the United States.
So as soon as I found out about this via Share World Love, I signed right up. There are many ways to participate. You can start by spreading the word about Blog Action Day 08. I'm certainly glad Julia did! Maybe you'd like to sign up to make a post of your own on October 15th. Or you could always make a small donation to one of the suggested charities on the Blog Action Day 08 website. Even better, become more aware of the global epidemic that is poverty by reviewing the resources they have available.
Take action. It's the NICE thing to do.

Hi, I'm Melissa! Welcome to my blog! I believe that kindness can change the world, so it's my mission to spread the concept of being nice, as simple as that may sound. I hope you'll have a look around!
Do you have a NICE story you'd like to share? Maybe one you've stumbled upon or something that has affected you personally? If so,

Here's a list of NICE folks who have mentioned Operation NICE on their site or supported us by using our badge. Thank you so much!

Thank you for posting about this. This also hits home to me. When I was 13, my parents decided to move to South America and it was a great experience but it has opened my eyes culturally. It breaks my heart seeing kids on the street going through dumpster, kids working as young as 6 just to provide some kind of income for the family and not to mention living in slums. I've never been exposed or seen such level of poverty. Recently, I've been back visiting and it has gotten worse. Unfortunately we live in a "bubble society", but hopefully that can change and this is just a stepping stone towards it.
"Every day we have multitude of opportunities to give. An offer of support, a kind word or a beautiful smile... When we initiate this exchange we create a domino effect of abundance and good fortune. There is no scarcity when we all share. We create a prosperous and healthy reality and we can discover the light within ourselves. It is important to understand that when we give to someone else we are also giving to ourselves." - www.myinnerworld.com
