So I'm driving through one of those intersections that all of us St. Louisian's hate (Laclede Station and Murdoch for your local's info!), and this girl about my age almost hits me as she's trying to make a left turn but couldn't see me because of these other cars in front of her... anyway, I scream from fear and then she did something that has changed my day completely.... instead of honking and acting like a maniac like so many of us would have done, she had the sweetest look on her face and did the sign language for "I'm Sorry". I immediately went into shock ;) and worked out a half-smile because there wasn't time for much else in the middle of an intersection! The only reason I knew what she meant was because I had taught hearing-impaired children before and picked up a few signs along the way. I have NEVER seen such an act of kindness on the road! Have you? Especially this time of year where we're all supposed to be happy, chipper, and patient with each other, but instead we all almost kill each other as we try to make it to each shop and store for our dang Christmas presents! HELLO?! I have been thinking about that girl all day... I don't know if she was hearing impaired or just happened to know the sign from somewhere along the way, but I'm planning on using it in the future. Wouldn't it be great if we all acted like that on the road? Changing one person at a time, right? :) OK, so here's your quick sign language lesson.... to say "I'm Sorry", make a fist with your hand and move it in a circular motion on your chest. That's it!
I don't know about you, but I've been in situations where I did something wrong on the road and wanted to apologize to another driver. So I'm keeping that sign in my back pocket for when I inevitably do it again. Hopefully you will too!

what a great blog! I'll have to remember that sign, too.
we recently moved from a big east coast city to a small west coast town and everything is so different, especially the customer service and friendliness. people are VERY nice here, it took us by surprise. it definitely makes me feel more relaxed and pleasant in return when I'm out running errands with my three little ones!
